Taye Diggs is going from Broadway back to ABC.

The Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Rent grad is returning to the network to star in the drama pilot Doomsday, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The project is set in the aftermath of Sept. 11, when the U.S. government instituted a secret think tank comprised of the most creative minds in science and entertainment who were tasked solely with dreaming up manmade disaster scenarios and their possible solutions. The ideas they invented were so dangerous that the list was sealed and the program shut down. But when a catastrophe occurs that seems ripped from the pages of the missing doomsday book, the team is brought back years later to prevent the disasters of their own making.

Diggs will topline the drama as Dr. Davis Albright, an engineer and architect who at one point was the youngest-ever head of disaster prevention for FEMA and the ex-husband to Elle Trask (currently uncast).

The role marks a return for Diggs to ABC following his run on the network's Shondaland drama Private Practice. His TV credits include Fox's Empire, TNT's Murder in the First and episodes of Fox's Rosewood and CBS' The Good Wife. He is repped by ICM Partners and Authentic Management.

Justified's Mark Bianculli and VJ Boyd are penning the Doomsday script for Sony Pictures Television and will executive produce alongside CSI alum Carol Mendelsohn and Julie Weitz. Diggs joins a cast that also includes Jack Davenport, Rachelle Lefevre and Dan Byrd.
