TV Ratings: ABC's 'Pan Am' Has Solid Start

Football dominated Sunday night with NBC’s Pittsburgh Steelers-Indianapolis Colts match-up pulling in a 7.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic (with a 9.6 among men 18-34 and 10.5 among men 25-54) and 17.7 million viewers overall from 8:30-11 p.m. ET.

(Numbers for football impacted NBC and CBS are preliminary and subject to change. But, NBC will win the night with a 5.9 rating in the demo and 14.8 million viewers from 7-11 p.m.)

STORY: NFL on NBC Dominates on First Sunday of Premiere Week

Overrun of the Green Bay Packers-Chicago Bears game into the 7 p.m. hour also juiced ratings at Fox, where premieres of the network’s animation lineup combined for a 4.4 rating in the demo with 9.5 million viewers. The Simpsons (3.8, 7.9 million) was up 3 percent year-over-year, The Cleveland Show (3.1, 6.0 million) was flat, Family Guy (4.1, 7.6 million) was down 9 percent and American Dad was flat (3.0, 5.7 million).

STORY: 'Pan Am': What the Viewers Are Saying

CBS’ coverage of the New York Jets-Oakland Raiders game slid the network’s primetime by approximately 27 minutes – giving CBS a 2.5 rating in the demo with 10.8 million viewers overall from 7-11 p.m. And although time zone adjusted numbers for the season premieres of The Good Wife -- on a new night and earlier timeslot -- and CSI: Miami, are not yet available, both shows are likely to show year-over-year erosion.

ABC averaged a 2.4 demo rating with 8.7 million viewers from 7-11 p.m. The final season premiere of Desperate Housewives pulled in a 3.1 rating with 9.7 million viewers, down 28 percent for its lowest-rated premiere ever. But Pan Am held its Desperate lead-in and actually built on it among total viewers  with 10.8 million for the hour.
