TV Ratings: Caitlyn Jenner and Diane Sawyer Reunion Interview Shrinks

The first interview between the two, confirming Jenner's transition, fetched a 15-year-high 17.1 million viewers for '20/20.'

Almost exactly two years to the day since their first sit-down, Diane Sawyer paid another visit to Caitlyn Jenner — this time to interview Jenner about her life as a woman, after first coming out as transgender on 20/20 in 2015.

The episode inched up from the show's recent outings, but it clearly did not approach the lofty highs of their first interview. Nielsen gives the one-hour 20/20 an average same-day audience of 4.3 million viewers and a 0.8 rating among adults 18-49. In the demo, that's steady with recent episodes, though the audience improved a little more than 10 percent from the previous weeks.

Sawyer and Jenner's first meeting was huge for ABC. The interview averaged 17.1 million viewers and a stunning 5.2 rating among adults 18-49. It was the biggest episode of 20/20 to air since the 1990s and set lofty expectations for Jenner's subsequent E! reality show. But I Am Cait was canceled after two softly rated seasons, with public interest in the former Olympian never matching its height during the speculative period before she announced her transition.

20/20 did not come close to being the night's top performer. CBS repeats won in viewers, and ABC's Shark Tank tied NBC's Dateline for demo spoils with an average 1.0 rating among adults 18-49. (Dateline, in 20/20's 10 p.m. hour, averaged a 1.1 rating with another true-crime treatment of the infamous Laci Peterson murder.)

Jenner is currently on the promotional circuit for her new book, The Secrets of My Life. On the heels of her Sawyer sit-down, she's set to appear on the Monday, April 24, episode of Tucker Carlson Tonight. (That will be the host's first telecast in Bill O'Reilly's old time slot.)
