TV Ratings: 'Good Morning America' Notches Historic May Sweep Wins
The ABC morning show boasts its largest margins of victory over "Today" in two decades.
Just one year ago, the back and forth ratings battle between a rising Good Morning America and beleaguered Today was in a different broadcast's favor from week to week. Nowadays, the ABC series' historic May sweep win seems like something of a given.
One of broadcasting's biggest battlegrounds is over for the morning shows, and Nielsen returns have ABC walking away with easy wins in both total viewers and the targeted adults 25-54. In fact, both measurements mark the largest margins of victory in two decades.
GMA averaged 2.1 million viewers in the key demo, up 2 percent from the same period last year and 110,000 viewers north of Today. The last May sweep that saw a victory of that size was in 1994. CBS This Morning came in a distant third, just under a million shy of GMA.
Total viewers had GMA averaging 921,000 north of Today (4.78 million), up 10 percent from last May with 5.7 million viewers. It last enjoyed that sweep margin over Today before the 1991-92 season, prior to Nielsen implementing its electronic database.
