TV Ratings: Olympic Trials Rise for NBC Win, ABC's 'Millionaire' and 'Makeover' Shrink
The two-hour women's gymnastics finals topped all broadcasts of the night, building significantly on the lead-in from track and field and swimming.
Surging 60 percent from the previous showing in 2008 and giving its best performance since 2000, NBC's coverage of the women's gymnastic finals of the U.S. Olympic trials drove the network to an easy win among adults 18-49 and total viewers Sunday night.
The two-hour gymnastics broadcast, averaging a 3.2 adults rating, followed track and field (1.4 adults rating) and swimming (2.1 adults rating) for a 2.5 showing among the demo for the night. NBC also averaged a dominant 8.3 million viewers.
After being sidelined by the NBA Finals, ABC's Secret Millionaire and Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition both returned after a three-week absence from the air with double-digit drops. Millionaire was down four-tenths of a point in the demo for a 1.1 rating among adults 18-49, while Makeover was down three-tenths for a 1.2 adults rating; both are series lows. Combined with an encore of America's Funniest Home Videos, they brought in a 1.2 adults 18-49 rating and 4.5 million viewers for the night.
Repeats of Fox's animation block earned third place among the nets with a 1.1 rating among adults 18-49, though the network averaged just 2.5 million viewers.
And Univision posted a small advantage over CBS among the demo. The Spanish-language network's 0.9 adults rating bested CBS' block of encores, which averaged a 0.8 rating among 18-49-ers. CBS placed second among viewers with 5.3 million.
