USA Network Orders Donny Deutsch Comedy Project
Donny Deutsch is getting the comedy treatment.
USA Network has ordered six episodes of a soft-scripted comedic series, tentatively titled Donny!, centered on a fictional version of the famed ad man, single dad and frequent TV personality. Deutsch will star in the half-hour project, which takes a satirical look at the media, wealth and modern romance through the eyes of Deutsch’s character. It's set to premiere later this year.
“Donny! is a Curb Your Enthusiasm style series, centered on the hyper-imagined real-life of Donny Deutsch," said USA president Chris McCumber in a statement announcing the news Thursday, adding: "The juxtaposition of how Donny portrays his public and personal life in this series is hilarious, and the storylines are a real wink for the viewers, showing that despite anyone’s profile or success, we all deal with the same issues.”
In the series, which is being executive produced by Banks Tarver and Ken Druckerman of Left/Right (Odd Mom Out, Mob Wives), Deutsch hosts his own daytime talk show, titled Donny! On camera, he is an expert on every topic, from cellulite to sexting; off-camera, he’s a filterless rogue, who lives in entertaining contrast to almost everything he espouses publicly. Surrounding him is a team of women who work tirelessly to cover his tracks, but he still finds a way to make bad decisions with good intentions.
At this stage, Deutsch should be familiar to NBCUniversal viewers as he's currently a regular on MSNBC's Morning Joe and previously hosted a CNBC talk show called The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch on CNBC. The Wharton grad, who serves as the chairman of leading ad agency Deutsch Inc., has appeared on Today and NBC's The Apprentice, too.
