'Vampire Diaries': Ian Somerhalder Proposes Damon-Elena Tropical Getaway (Video)
"The reflection that Damon has would be as if to say a 75-, 80-year-old man reflecting back on his high school sweetheart," Somerhalder tells THR of his character's old friend Sage.
The Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder shared his many thoughts about the progress of the ill-fated Damon and Elena relationship -- if you could even call it that.
"People tend to think that Damon and Elena have this phenomenal arc of this love-hate relationship," Somerhalder told The Hollywood Reporter at the PaleyFest carpet Saturday. "They think they have this phenomenal love relationship and they don't really up until this point."
Somerhalder addressed the obstacles that continue to plague the two. "There's no better way to say 'I love you' than to snap your brother's neck in half," he said.
"With Damon and Elena, there's something unspoken there that they can't explain," Somerhalder said. "The two of them, Damon and Elena, have a lot of bonding to do, a lot of understanding each other."
He added: "Damon makes her laugh, Damon will die for her protecting her, but Stefan is very pure in his love. It's not about good boy-bad boy."

If and when the moment comes when Elena reciprocates Damon's "I love you" with one of her own, how would he react? While Somerhalder didn't exactly answer the question, he did propose an entertaining idea.
"I think what they should do is Damon should just kidnap her and take her to the Caribbean, buy some island and just hang out for a while. See if she really means it," he joked.
Somerhalder also touched on the appearance of an old friend, Sage (guest star Cassidy Freeman), who comes into the Mystic Falls fray beginning in the episode "1912."
"The reflection that Damon has would be as if to say a 75-, 80-year-old man reflecting back on his high school sweetheart," he said. "Sage is Damon's Lexie."
The Vampire Diaries returns Thursday, March 15 at 8 p.m. on The CW.
