'Veronica Mars' Getting a Web Spinoff on The CW
UPDATED: Creator Rob Thomas will be involved with the project, which will likely consist of six to eight 10-minute segments and star Ryan Hansen.
Veronica Mars continues to enjoy a significant cultural revival ahead of March's release of the Kickstarter-funded film. The CW announced Wednesday that it's even reviving the property with a web series on its CW Seed website.
There are few immediate details on the project, which sees The CW reuniting with the property after canceling it in 2007, though creator Rob Thomas is on board. The project will likely consist of six to eight 10-minute segments and will feature Ryan Hansen as a version of Ryan trying to put together a Dick Casablancas spinoff of Veronica Mars, Thomas said.
"Rob and I spoke last night," said CW president Mark Pedowitz. "He's very excited about doing this for CW Seed. It may not appear before the film comes out."
The film, the result of $5.7 million in fan donations, comes out in limited release March 14 -- with an early world premiere set for the South by Southwest festival.
"He told me about his schedule, and I said, 'We'll take it whenever you're ready,' " added Pedowitz. Much of the cast, most notably stars Kristen Bell, Jason Dohring and Enrico Colantoni, returned for the film. And Bell, of course, already has a TV commitment in Showtime's House of Lies.
Pedowitz noted that the idea came to The CW from Warner Bros. Digital, with talks first starting a week ago, leaving several details of the project still to be determined. Pedowitz added that he's letting Thomas' busy schedule -- he's also adapting DC Comics' iZombie for the network -- dictate the web spinoff's development.
The exec had few details on if the project could ultimately have an on-air run similar to what the network did when it broadcast Joss Whedon's three-part web series Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog as a special last year.
"I have great faith in Rob that he will deliver something fantastic and should it ever turn into a TV series again, hopefully he'll think about us," Pedowitz told reporters following his TCA session.
In addition to the Veronica Mars film and web series, Thomas is also penning a Veronica Mars book series. The tie-in to the film will be coming out in 2014 from Vintage Books.
