'The Voice' Recap: Two Coaches Fall Short of the Season Finale
Country's contagious factor doesn't translate for one contestant; Fall Out Boy and 'Voice' alumni Tony Lucca, Terry McDermott and Nicholas David perform new singles.
Though The Voice nabbed the honor of best reality competition series at the Critics' Choice Television Awards on Monday night, not everybody on the NBC singing show can be a winner. Tuesday night's episode narrowed the field down to three singers and just two coaches, suggesting that for one mentor, Voice history has a high likelihood of repeating itself.
Blake Shelton was the only coach with two singers still standing in the semifinals; Adam Levine, Usher and Shakira each entered with one contestant each.
But only three hopeful musicians made it to next week's finale: Michelle Chamuel of Team Usher, and Danielle Bradbery and The Swon Brothers of Team Blake. Levine's Amber Carrington and Shakira's Sasha Allen were sent home.
Note that both of Shelton's remaining singers have been sent to the season finale, putting him exactly where he was at this point last season with Scottish rocker Terry McDermott and country crossover champion Cassadee Pope. But Usher has coached Chamuel through a musical and emotional journey that continually captures America's votes, so the "Twisted" singer may be the one to break Shelton's winning streak and take the Voice throne -- leg up and all.
The broadcast also included a kickoff performance by Fall Out Boy, a group rendition of "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" by Poison, and a homecoming of sorts for Voice alumni. Levine's season-two finalist Tony Lucca premiered his latest track "Never Let You Go," Shelton's season-three runner-up McDermott rocked out with his viral post-show track "Pictures," and season-three finalist Nicholas David of Cee Lo Green's team debuted his new single, "Say Goodbye."
