The top five artists were announced on The Voice tonight, with only one contestant going home after the nationwide vote. It was a night full of reunions, with several Voice alumni returning to perform. The fan instant save was used again to get one of the bottom two through to next week’s semifinal. “It’s getting down to the wire,” coach Blake Shelton said.

In the first round of alumni performances, season five’s runner-up Jacquie Lee from Christina Aguilera’s team sang her new Sia-written single “Tears Fall.” Season three’s Avery Wilson also returned, singing “If I Have To.” It’s hard to believe Wilson, who was on CeeLo Green’s team, was eliminated during the Knockouts round of season three, especially with music industry legend Clive Davis praising him on tonight’s episode. Singing “Bad News Breaker,” Vicci Martinez, the season-three finalist from Team CeeLo, also returned to The Voice, and season seven’s champion Craig Wayne Boyd closed out the alumni performances with his new single “I’m Still Here.”

Between announcing results, Carson Daly asked the season eight contestants questions about their experiences so far on the show. “You are really one of the most incredibly musicians and singers I’ve ever met,” Kimberly Nichole said to Aguilera. Next, Daly asked Koryn Hawthorne, who has been saved by Pharrell twice, what’s the most important lesson her coach has taught her. “Stay true to the artist that I am,” Hawthorne replied. “Adam has really taught me to own what I do,” Joshua Davis said of his coach Adam Levine. “Christina Aguilera has been one of my biggest musical inspirations throughout my entire life,” India Carney said, thanking Aguilera for getting her to this point.

The first artist through to the semifinal was Sawyer Fredericks from Team Pharrell. He’s the youngest artist left in the competition and had back-to-back solid performances last night. Meghan Linsey from Team Blake also advanced, along with Team Pharrell’s Hawthorne. Joshua Davis was the last artist who automatically got through to the semifinal, leaving Carney to once again sing for the instant save, along with Nichole.

Despite having the strongest team all season, both of Aguilera’s remaining artists found themselves in the bottom two. Carney sang Pink’s “Perfect,” and Nichole sang “Seven Nation Army” by The White Stripes. Both are immensely talented artists who could win the whole competition, so no matter how the voting went, it was going to be a disappointment no matter what. It was a rough night for Team Christina.

Viewers voted to instantly save Carney for the second week in a row, sending the very talented Nichole home. Carney is Aguilera’s last shot to win the season. The semifinals kick off next week on The Voice. Did your favorite make the cut?
