'The Voice' Winner Javier Colon on Having Justin Bieber In His Corner: 'He Hooked Me Up'
Is there a duet between NBC's singing champ and the pop phenom in the works?
Now that everything is said and done, we’re sure The Voice’s newly crowned winner is very thankful he picked Adam Levine for his coach when he had his pick of any of the four during the blind round auditions. And not just for the Maroon 5 front man’s musical knowhow, but also his connections to music’s biggest young pop star, Justin Bieber.
“I don’t know Justin and I think he was just recently turned on to what I do,” Colon, 34, tells The Hollywood Reporter about having the pop singer’s support. “Adam knows Justin and his manager. I guess they played some basketball at one point. I don’t know how it came about besides I got a nice tweet saying to support me from his manager, who then Justin retweeted. And then Justin sent another message the next day saying to support me, which I thought was awesome.”
The singer says the connection could have also come via his friend, L.A.-based singer/songwriter Ernie Halter. Bieber is a fan of the artist and generated headlines last month when he joined Halter on stage at a show in L.A. with his then-unconfirmed girlfriend, Disney actress and singer Selena Gomez.
“Ernie has a great following on Twitter,” Colon explains. “And he went out and campaigned for votes for me and told his followers to vote for me, as well as sent a message to Justin.”
During the finale, host Carson Daly said that there was only a 2% difference in America’s votes between Colon and Team Blake Shelton’s finalist, Dia Frampton. So, Colon doesn’t take the support he received from Bieber for granted.
“Especially when it was so close,” he says. “I know a lot of people see his tweets. Did they translate into actual people watching the show and voting? I would imagine so. How many people, I’m not sure. But, it definitely couldn’t hurt for sure.”
Aside from the $100,000 cash prize, part of Colon’s bounty includes a record contract with Universal Republic with an album currently slated for a September release. So, we had to ask if a duet with Bieber was in the works.
“That would be awesome,” Colon tells us. “Again, I don’t know Justin personally. It's just he hooked me up with a really nice tweet. I’m going to send him another thank you tweet for doing that for me and also see if we can get together in the future.”
