'Weeds' EP Says The Botwin Boys Realize 'Nancy Was Their True North'
Over the past six seasons that Nancy Botwin (Mary-Louise Parker) has evolved on Showtime’s Weeds, and life got stranger for the family, the boys have often threatened that they would leave her.
At the end of last season, they did just that by escaping American authorities and the Mexican mafia by moving to Copenhagen while Nancy took the fall for Shane’s (Alexander Gould) killing of Pilar at the end of Season 5.
But, life without Nancy wasn’t everything the Botwin men expected it to be. “They’ve tried to start their own lives and to varying degrees they’ve strayed into awkward situations,” executive producer Roberto Benabib tells The Hollywood Reporter.
“It was a bit of an empty threat in the sense that they always thought that they wanted to leave and threatened to leave,” he continues. “But once they actually did and went to Copenhagen, they realized Nancy was their true north.”
As we enter Monday’s episode, the guys have returned to the U.S. to reunite with Nancy. And while they’ll find their matriarch a bit changed by her three years of prison time, Benabib says leaving her again isn’t an option.
“This whole season is about acceptance,” he tells us. “Nancy accepting who she is and what she does, and the kids and Andy (Justin Kirk) accepting that Nancy is a huge part of their lives that they kind of can’t do without.”
New episodes of Weeds air Mondays at 10 p.m. on Showtime.
