Whitney Houston Remembered With Cable, Broadcast Specials
UPDATED: Encore, VH1, MTV, OWN, Lifetime and ABC are among the networks planning specials in memory of the pop icon who died Saturday.
Televised coverage of the 2012 Grammys focused heavily on Whitney Houston's sudden death Saturday, but several networks have announced additional plans to celebrate the iconic singer and actress.
MTV, which reported live from the Grammy red carpet, is culling from 27 years' worth of videos and interviews for a Whitney Houston "in her own words” special to air later in the week.
Sister networks MTV Hits and MTV Jams played nonstop blocks of Houston videos through Sunday, while an hourlong block of her most memorable clips led into MTV's Grammy coverage.
On VH1, four Houston-focused specials are planned for the coming week. First up, VH1 News Special: Whitney Houston: Death of a Diva will air at 9:30 p.m. Monday. A roundup of reactions and remembrances from guests of Saturday's Clive Davis pre-Grammys party, the broadcast will be hosted by Janell Snowden. 100 Greatest Women in Music follows the special, with added acknowledgements of Houston's legacy among female vocalists.
The network began airing Houston's music videos Saturday at midnight and continued to broadcast them throughout Sunday, with VH1 Classics airing a more curated tribute, Whitney A-to-Z, at noon Tuesday and again at 8 p.m. On Thursday, the network will premiere VH1 News Presents Whitney Houston’s Greatest Moments. A statement from VH1 says the program will draw largely from the singer's performances on VH1 Divas in 1999 and 2003 and VH1 Honors in 1996.
Lifetime will also celebrate Houston on Monday with a special broadcast of The Bodyguard. Houston's breakout film role found her starring opposite Kevin Costner as a singer who falls in love with a former Secret Service agent tasked with protecting her from a stalker. The film's soundtrack received both Grammy and Academy Award nominations. Bodyguard will air at 8 p.m., pushing Lifetime's new unscripted series America's Supernanny to 11 p.m.
OWN on Thursday will re-air a 2009 interview with Houston and Oprah Winfrey that detailed the late singer's drug use and troubled marriage to Bobby Brown. The Oprah Winfrey Show with Houston will air Thursday at 9 p.m. ET and will feature Winfrey sharing memories of the singer.
ABC News' Nightline on Monday will feature Cynthia McFadden anchoring a Houston special featuring an interview she performed Monday with record producer David Foster, while World News With Diane Sawyer will offer extended portions of the anchor's 2002 interview with the actress-singer from her Atlanta home.
On Wednesday, E! News will air a special, Whitney Houston: Last Days of a Legend. Giuliana Rancic will host the special that will feature interviews from those at the Beverly Hilton at the time of her death as well as those who interacted with The Bodyguard star in her last days. The special will provide an account of her actions and whereabouts during the final days of her life and include comments from singer Kelly Price, who was the last person to ever share a stage with Houston. The special airs at 9 p.m.
On Friday, ABC News' 20/20 will air a two-hour special edition, One Moment in Time: The Life of Whitney Houston, set for 9-11 p.m. PT.
Also on Friday, cable net Encore will celebrate Houston's feature film career and air Waiting to Exhale and The Preacher's Wife at 8 and 10:05 p.m., respectively.
In addition to dedicated specials, Fox's Glee -- which coincidentally will feature a cover of Dolly Parton/Houston's "I Will Always Love You" -- will dedicate the episode to the late singer.
