'10,000 BC' claims top spot in 30 territories

In the midst of a crowded international market gearing up for the Easter holidays, the prehistoric epic "10,000 BC" shot to the forefront with a weekend blast of $39.2 million from 6,850 screens in 51 markets, ranking No. 1 in 30 countries.

As the spring break approaches, there's a whole new lineup of films available in countries around the globe. In the U.K., where "10,000 BC" opened No. 1 to $3.9 million from 474 prints, the Roland Emmerich action-adventure was followed in order by the three-day preview of "Horton Hears a Who!" ($2.3 million from 482 screens), "Vantage Point" "The Game Plan" and "The Other Boleyn Girl."

Minus the U.K. preview, the animated family adventure "Horton" showed its holiday potential with a $16.1 million weekend from 4,866 screens in 29 markets. At the same time, Summit Entertainment roused the teen crowd with the dance-romance sequel "Step Up 2 the Streets," which gathered $6.8 million in its opening weekend from 1,303 screens in 20 markets.

And that French phenom, "Bienvenue Chez Les Ch'tis," continued to amaze foreign distributors as it entered the third week of an all-time record takeoff, tallying an estimated $26.7 million from France, Belgium and French-speaking Switzerland, with $25.6 million, only a 16% drop from the second session, coming from France alone. The cume of the comedy about the French sticks has reached an estimated $115 million.

At the same time, this seems to the time of the year that the French film industry exerts its clout before the onset of U.S. blockbusters that begin pouring in for the start of summer season in May. Homegrown entries held eight out of the top 10 spots on the French boxoffice chart. Over the weekend, Warner Bros.' "10,000 BC" arrived at No. 2 with $3.3 million from 562 screens, and Disney's "National Treasure: Book of Secrets" held at No. 10 after 5 weeks in release, with a market cume of $17.5 million. Gaumont's "MR 73" opened in the No. 3 spot with $2.8 million from 478.

"Vantage Point" made the overseas top five with $7.8 million to raise its cume to $40 million. The Sony political thriller about efforts to assassinate a president opened No. 1 in Australia ($1.1 million from 196), No. 3 in Brazil ($760,000 from 139) and No. 1 in Indonesia ($228,000 from 35).

Other No. 1 openings for "10,000 BC" included Korea ($3.4 million) and Russia ($4 million from 536 screens). The film came in No. 2 in Italy ($2.9 million from 482) behind local title "Grande, Gross E Verdone" ($4 million from 431).

Dr. Seuss' "Horton" opened No. 1 in Germany ($3.1 million from 809) and Brazil ($1.6 million from 419), and No. 2 in Spain ($1.9 million from 471) and Mexico ($1.9 million from 1,088). All 29 of the weekend openings were either No. 1 or No. 2, with "Horton" ready to take on 20 new territories this coming weekend.

Paramount's family fantasy, "The Spiderwick Chronicles" may be on its way to making up for its domestic deficit, taking in $4 million from 1,346 screens in 18 markets and getting ready to hit 21 new territories this coming weekend.

Disney's "Enchanted" re-turned to the limelight thanks to a $5.4 million opening at 530 screens in Japan, which raised the cume of the family offering to $190 million. Except for an expected outing in China, Japan is the last stop for "Enchanted."

Best picture Oscar winner "No Country for Old Men" took in $4.7 million from 1,587 screens in 42 markets, lifting its cume to $68 million, while Oscar contender "Juno" went up to $58.3 million, with $48.5 million coming from territories handled by Fox International and $9.8 million from those under the hand of Mandate International. "There Will Be Blood," also Oscar-tinted, is falling behind the other contenders, hitting $26 million after a $2.1 million weekend from 1,106 screens in 16 markets. Poland is set to open on March 29 and Japan on April 26.

More weekend action: "Jumper" hit $105 million after a $4.8 million weekend; "The Other Boleyn Girl," $4 million (cume: $13.3 million); "The Game Plan," $1.8 million (cume: $28 million); "27 Dresses," $1.2 million (cume: $42.7 million); "Meet the Spartans," $1.8 million (cume: $48.4 million); "Kite Runner," $1.1 million (cume: 30.1 million).

Disney's "Hanna Montana 3-D," the concert film of the Hanna Montana/Miley Cyrus 2007 tour, is starting to make the rounds overseas, with 22 markets set to open through July. It's part of Disney's plan for eight special 3-D offerings in the next two years.
