2006 a good year for Canada's indies

Distributors offset drop in exports

OTTAWA -- Canadian indie distributors offset a steep drop in program exports in 2006 with higher domestic sales and lower operating expenses, Statistics Canada reported Tuesday.

The government statistics agency said that distribution revenue from exports fell to CAN$32.8 million ($32.5 million) in 2006, the last year surveyed, from a year-earlier CAN$90.2 million ($89.4 million).

Despite the export dive, Statscan said that Canadian film and video distributors saw their profit margin rise to 25% in 2006, compared with 19% the year before.
