The Aug. 25 reveal that Amazon is buying game-streaming service Twitch for $970 million comes on the heels of a surge of media M&A activity from January to June.

Total deal value jumped to $148.1 billion in the first half of the year, compared with $48.4 billion in the same period a year earlier and $25.1 billion in 2012, prompting PricewaterhouseCoopers to declare 2014 the "year of the megadeal."
