'Marshland' and 'El Nino' are up for the most awards, while 'Wild Tales' received nine nominations

Alberto Rodriguez's Marshland and Daniel Monzon's El Nino, two Spanish thrillers, will face off in 16 categories — including best picture, director, actor and actress — at this year's Goya Awards ceremony, Spain's top honors. Damian Szifron's Wild Tales, co-produced by Almodovar shingle El Deseo, is up for best picture and director, along with seven other nominations.

Carlos Vermut's Magical Girl and Jose Maria Goenaga's Loreak round out the best picture nominees, while Rodriguez, Monzon, Szifron and Vermut will also compete for best director.

Antonio Banderas, who is set to receive an honorary Goya award at the Feb. 7 ceremony, saw his sci-fi Automata land nominations for photography, artistic director, wardrobe and sound.

A Spanish Affair, which has set box-office highs for Spanish film, landed five nominations, mainly for supporting acting roles.

Argentina's evergreen male lead, Ricardo Darin, snagged a nomination for his role in Szifron's acidic comedy, Wild Tales, which has the distinction of being nominated as the best Spanish film and the best Latin American film as a Spanish-Argentine co-production. The film, which will represent Argentina in its run up to the Oscars, swept up at the Argentine awards ceremony last month and walked away with 10 statues.

"The nominations represent different kinds of films and genres and give an idea how varied Spanish cinema is," Marshland producer Jose Antonio Felez told reporters after the announcement of the nominations.

For example, films like  Javier Fesser's 3D extravaganza Mortadelo and Filemon Against Jimmy el Cachondo, a box-office sensation with $3 million in sales and favored to win the best animated film award, stands alongside critically acclaimed Magical Girl, which won the Golden Shell at San Sebastian but only earned $201,000 in theaters and didn't even make it into the top 150 performers in Spain.
