Spirit Awards: 'Moonlight's' Barry Jenkins Wins Best Director

Jenkins also took home the award for best screenplay on Saturday.

Barry Jenkins was named best director for Moonlight at the 2017 Independent Spirit Awards.

Jenkins was nominated alongside Andrea Arnold (American Honey), Pablo Larrain (Jackie), Jeff Nichols (Loving) and Kelly Reichardt (Certain Women).

Earlier in the ceremony, Moonlight also took home the award for best screenplay, which Jenkins accepted with Tarell Alvin McCraney.

Onstage, Jenkins paid tribute to fellow nominees, including American Honey's Andrea Arnold as well as Manchester by the Sea's "Uncle Kenny" (Kenneth Lonergan).

He dedicated the award to his cast and crew, "to anybody whose name was on the call sheet for those 25 days down in Miami in that hot-ass weather."

The award was presented by Jon Hamm.

The 2017 Film Independent Spirit Awards were hosted by John Mulaney and Nick Kroll, airing live on IFC from the Santa Monica Pier.
