Spirit Awards: 'American Honey' Shut Out

'American Honey'

Like 'Moonlight,' Andrea Arnold's film had led the awards with six nominations.

As Moonlight shined bright at the Spirit Awards — sweeping the evening with six wins — American Honey was overshadowed.

The two films had led the race with six nominations apiece. American Honey's nominations included best feature, director, screenplay, cinematography and editing — all of which were won by Moonlight.

In the acting categories, newcomer Sasha Lane and Riley Keough were nominated for best actress and supporting actress, which were won by Elle's Isabelle Huppert and Other People's Molly Shannon, respectively.

Shia LaBeouf was also nominated for best supporting actor, which was won by Hell or High Water's Ben Foster.

Directed by Andrea Arnold, American Honey follows a group of teenagers as they drift across the country selling magazine subscriptions. The A24 release grossed $1.8 million worldwide.

The 32nd Film Independent Spirit Awards aired live on IFC on Saturday, Feb. 25. Nick Kroll and John Mulaney hosted the ceremony, held in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica.
