21st Century Fox's Fox Star Studios Strengthens Presence in South India
The film operation strikes an alliance with well-known producer C. V. Kumar following a similar deal with A. R. Murugadoss that gave it a foothold in the Tamil-language region.
NEW DELHI – Fox Star Studios has enhanced its presence in the south Indian Tamil language film industry via an alliance with well-known producer C V Kumar's banner Thirukumaran Entertainment. While financial terms were not given, the agreement covers two projects -- Mundasupatti and V. Chitram -- both slated for release in 2014.
Mumbai-based Fox Star Studios was established in 2008 replacing 20th Century Fox India to handle the studio's distribution of Hollywood films here while foraying into Hindi language Bollywood cinema and the south Indian industry. FSS releases have included Shah Rukh Khan's 2010 title My Name Is Khan and more recent titles including thrillers Raaz 3D and Murder 3.
FSS first ventured into the Tamil industry via a multiple picture deal with leading producer/director A R Murugadoss, which saw the 2011 release Engaeyum Eppothum (Anywhere Anytime) and this year's Vathikuchi (Matchstick).
“I remember many years ago, when I went to Los Angeles and saw the giant movie studios there, I decided I wanted to be a movie producer. I could never have imagined that in a few years, I would be working with a leading international studio like Fox Star Studios,” said Kumar. “It is good to work with a partner who has an international expertise in developing, marketing and distributing films.”
Kumar's Thirukumaran Entertainment has produced hits like Attakathi, Pizza and Soodhu Kavvum.
“We are focused on increasing our presence in the Tamil film industry, as we have done in the Hindi film industry. While we have extended our successful association in Tamil with A R Murugadoss to Hindi as well, we are also increasing our footprint in the Tamil industry by partnering with C V Kumar’s Thirukumaran Entertainment. C V Kumar has proven himself as one of the market leaders who is high concept driven with budget conscious -- qualities that resonate well with our brand,” said FSS CEO Vijay Singh.
FSS recently released its Hollywood tentpole The Wolverine here on July 26, grossing about $2.5 million (150 million rupees) on its opening weekend. The studio says this is the third highest opening for the film in the Asia Pacific market and tenth internationally.
