5 Days of Shoes: Marion Cotillard's Dynamic Dior Platforms
Plus, a look at Angela Bassett's sky-high, python-embossed stilettos by Giuseppe Zanotti.
While Marion Cotillard’s evening looks always embody the epitome of French chic, her daytime looks are nothing to sneeze at. Managing to look effortlessly downtown cool in Dior and skinny jeans, her choice of shoe says volumes about her. Her pick? An angular square-toe black rubber platform with blush pink and bright citron detailing inspired by the brand’s 2014 athletic-meet-luxe runway shoe collection. Adventurous, forward-thinking and totally at ease in the highest of high fashion, this is a woman who knows her footwear mind and isn’t afraid to speak it.
Nicole Kidman pulled a Kate Middleton this week — recycling a dress — and for good reason, as it was a distinctive Salvatore Ferragamo number that was both sexy and sophisticated. Previously seen wearing it at the Shanghai Film Festival, Kidman appeared on The Tonight Show Tuesday with the black Dolce & Gabbana four-inch cross-strap, peep-toe stilettos (the very same style sole sister Emma Stone wore earlier this year with a similarly midi-length dress). While her conversation about having an old crush on Jimmy Fallon was slightly awkward (and hilariously entertaining), the shoes most definitely were not.
Angela Bassett made her debut as a director this week at a screening of her film, Whitney, at L.A.'s Paley Center on Tuesday. Looking as exceptional as ever, the director wore 6-inch python-embossed, peep-toe stilettos with metallic detailing from Giuseppe Zanotti. Paired with her Theory suit and ALC crop top, Basset looked at once strong, feminine and modern. Bassett’s stylist, Jennifer Austin, said of the look: "For Angela's premiere I wanted to push the envelope a bit and do something young and fun. With simple silhouettes I love to add elements of texture to help break the look up, and the snake-print pump from Giuseppe Zanotti was a perfect fit!"
Jemima Kirke has cultivated a sense of sartorial style that's effortlessly cool. For the Girls season four premiere party on Sunday, Kirke paired a luxurious silk satin floor-length maxi with Sophia Webster four-inch, lace-up, rhinestone-covered suede and satin stilettos with a lacquered heel. Said the designer of the HBO star's look: "Jemima has a great sense of style, and I find the mule shape classic and glam with just the right amount of sass. I think she looks amazing and I'm a big fan of the show." We couldn’t agree more.
Kathy Griffin has been making the rounds this week talking about her new role on E!’s Fashion Police, which debuts Jan. 12 after the Golden Globes. Griffin, who usually favors a platform (the higher the better), kept it daytime chic for her appearance on the Today show. Sergio Rossi pointy-toe snakeskin mid-height stilettos added a dynamic element to her red sheath dress. During her conversation with Savannah Guthrie, Griffin noted that her idol and friend, Joan Rivers "absolutely left big shoes to fill, and I'm bringing my own slippers." We look forward to seeing them Monday.
