'Jesus Christ Superstar' Sets Broadway Return for 2012
The Tony Award Nominated show will bring its Canadian production back to New York.
Following its successful run at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, Jesus Christ Superstar has set a date to return to Broadway.
The Tony nominated musical, written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, will hit New York City in the spring of 2012. Though the move was largely expected, producers made it official on Tuesday. Previews will begin on March 1 at the Neil Simon Theatre, with an official opening slated for March 22.
The religious themed musical began its initial run on Broadway in 1971, earning five Tony Award nominations, and inspiring a film adaptation in 1973. Jesus Christ Superstar will end its current run at the Canadian festival on Nov. 6, when it will move to California’s La Jolla Playhouse from Nov. 18 to Dec. 31.
No casting has been confirmed, but artistic director Des McAnuff reportedly anticipates the majority of his original cast -- including Chilina Kennedy, Paul Nolan, Josh Young, Bruce Dow and Brent Carver -- to remain onboard.
The Superstar revival is one of two Biblical rock musicals returning to Broadway this season. Stephen Schwartz and John-Michael Tebelak's 1971 show, Godspell, begins previews Oct. 13, with official opening set for Nov. 7. Daniel Goldstein directs the production, with Weeds star Hunter Parrish stepping into the sandals of the peace-and-love-era Christ.
