MGM and 20th Century Fox Launches 'James Bond' 50th Anniversary Blu-Ray Set With Roger Moore
LONDON – Sir Roger Moore, familiar with stunts from turning out as James Bond seven times in the franchise, lent his skills Wednesday to a different kind of stunt – the publicity one.
He was on hand in London to set a digital timer on a golden briefcase containing the first copy of the Bond 50 Blu-ray collection before it embarks on a journey the length of Great Britain in an Aston Martin DBS, the car featured in Quantum of Solace in 2008.
The car and the blu ray box set is scheduled to start its week long road trip Sept. 17 beginning from Eilean Donan Castle in the Scottish Highlands.
Moore, keeping strictly to the script, said he was delighted to launch the Aston Martin on its tour of Great Britain "with its special golden cased cargo, marking 50 years of 007 movies and the release of all 22 films on Blu-ray.”
The case is also scheduled to be carried by other 007 icons including Bond actresses Britt Ekland, Shirley Eaton, Tania Mallet and Eunice Gayson, classic villain Richard Kiel (Jaws), Oscar winning costume designer Lindy Hemming, stunt coordinator Paul Weston and legendary director John Glen.
Gayson, who played Sylvia Trench, in Dr. No (1962) and From Russia With Love (1963) noted that "no-one could have predicted back in 1962 that five decades later it would be a huge global phenomenon."
Locations the case will take in on it's journey aside from Eilean Donan Castle which doubled as the British Secret Service HQ in The World Is Not Enough (1999) will Stoke Park, the scene of 1964’s classic golfing encounter between Bond and Auric Goldfinger and the Eden Project in Cornwall, which doubled as villain Gustav Graves’ diamond mine in Die Another Day (2002).
Each location will be presented with a commemorative gold disc celebrating their part in 007’s 50-year history.
At Nene Valley Railway, Bond stunt performers will run with the golden briefcase along a moving train celebrating the Bond action scene in Octopussy (1983) with an introduction by Glen scheduled.
Glen directed five classic Bond films.
After seven days the golden briefcase is due to arrive in Central London Sept. 24 with Ekland and Kiel set to hand-deliver it to the HMV store on Oxford Street.
The Blu-Ray set is being launched by MGM and 20th Cenury Fox Home Entertainment in conjunction with Eon Productions.
The 23rd outing in the franchise, Sam Mendes' Skyfall, starring Daniel Craig, will take its world bow at the Royal Albert Hall Oct. 23 and is a Royal London in Performance in the company of Prince Charles and The Duchess of Cornwall.
