A domestic Liberation for three-part 'Tokyo!'

Liberation Entertainment has snatched up North American rights in a low-six-figure deal to "Tokyo!" the film triptych from directors Michel Gondry, Leos Carax and Joon-ho Bong. The short films take on the Japanese metropolis through the lenses of the three auteurs.

"Tokyo!" had its world premiere in Un Certain Regard and will be released theatrically this year by Liberation.

Carax's segment, titled "Merde," focuses on a man who engages in provocative acts on the streets of the city. Bong helmed "Shaking Tokyo," about a recluse who falls in love during an earthquake. Gondry's "Interior Design" is a fable that revolves around a couple drifting apart.

The movie follows the trend of "Paris, j'taime" and the upcoming "New York, I Love You," both of which package shorts from a diverse group of directors whose films are shot and set in a particular city and reflect its different aspects.

Los Angeles- and London-based Liberation launched in 2006 but only recently ramped up its theatrical distribution arm.

Liberation's Rob Williams negotiated the deal with Wild Bunch's Laurent Baudens. (partialdiff)
