A Paul Thomas Anderson Comedy? 'Soon, Hopefully'
The Oscar-nominated writer-director says he wants to do a "full blown comedy" in the vein of "Airplane!"
This is not a joke: Paul Thomas Anderson wants to do a full blown, laugh-out-loud comedy.
The Academy Award-nominated writer/director -- known for his dramatic opuses like Boogie Nights, Magnolia and his most recent epic, The Master -- recently expressed his adulation for comedies Airplane! and Ted, saying he's seriously considering a run at a similar style of comedy.
Speaking to MovieHole.net, when Anderson was asked if we'll see a comedy from him in the near future, he said, "You mean like full blown comedy? Soon hopefully. I have to write it. It sounds daunting."
The filmmaker, who even turned Adam Sandler into a respected dramatic actor in Punch-Drunk Love, continued, "I’d like to make a film like Airplane! That never gets old. Or Ted. It was a big hit. Why? Because it’s great. Movies that are that big a hit are never f--king bad. I mean, there’s no such… You know, people aren’t that stupid, that movie’s a hit because it’s hilarious. I hope [Seth MacFarlane] makes another film."
The news doesn't come as a huge surprise, considering Anderson is married to Saturday Night Live alum, Maya Rudolph.
The real question is, can he turn in a film that's only ninety minutes long? Or are we in for the longest comedy ever made?
According to Anderson, we'll soon find out.
