A 'Poppins' fresh show

11 Outer Critics Circle noms

"Mary Poppins" and "The Coast of Utopia" lead the nominations for the Outer Critics Circle Awards, announced Monday.

The awards — the first of the season to acknowledge Broadway productions — are administered by out-of-town critics and journalists that cover New York theater. They honor both Broadway and off-Broadway productions.

"Mary Poppins," the musical adaptation of the popular Walt Disney Co. movie, received 11 noms, including outstanding new Broadway musical, actor in a musical (Gavin Lee) and actress in a musical (Ashley Brown). It will vie for outstanding new Broadway musical with "Curtains," "LoveMusik" and "Spring Awakening."

"Utopia," Tom Stoppard's trilogy about the history of Russian philosophy and politics in the 19th century, received nine nominations, including for best new Broadway play and four in the acting categories: outstanding actor in a play (Brian F. O'Byrne), actress (Jennifer Ehle), featured actor (Billy Crudup) and featured actress (Martha Plimpton).

The other shows up for outstanding new Broadway play are "Frost/Nixon," "Coram Boy" and "Radio Golf."

Other shows receiving multiple nominees are "Curtains" with six, "LoveMusik" and "Frost/Nixon" (five) and "Coram Boy" and "In the Heights" (four). "Spring Awakening," which is up for six Lucille Lortel Awards, received three OCC noms, including outstanding new Broadway musical.
