After nearly two years off the air, NY Med is back on call. ABC News' critically acclaimed docuseries about the inner workings of Manhattan’s New York-Presbyterian Hospital and Newark’s University Hospital premieres Tuesday, June 24, at 10 p.m.

NY Med, from the same producers as Hopkins and Boston Med, premiered during the summer of 2012 -- winning its hour with a 1.2 rating in the key demo and an average 5.5 million viewers. The eight-part sophomore run comes on the heels of nearly two years of production.

It marks the series' second visit to Manhattan's New York-Presbyterian Hospital (featured in the 2012 iteration). This time producers branched out to Newark's University Hospital, where emergency room doctors must deal with all manner of inner-city blight and dysfunction, including a preponderance of gunshot and stabbing victims.

“A medical crisis will bring most of us to the hospital at some point,” said executive producer Terence Wrong. “Where we live can be destiny. NY Med offers a stark contrast between the patient populations of Manhattan and Newark, which play out for viewers as this series unfolds.”

Also returning is daytime star Dr. Mehmet Oz, who continues to perform heart surgeries. ABC News cameras captured Dr. Oz during a chance encounter in the ER with a young actor who unexpectedly takes a very dire turn.
