ABC's 'Lost' puts on a show
But Fox tops in viewers, demo
The two-hour season finale of ABC's "Lost" topped the second week of summer broadcast programming, but Fox remained out in front overall as its reality shows continued to drum up dominating numbers.
"Lost" (12.3 million viewers, 4.9 rating/13 share in the adults 18-49 demographic) won Thursday and the week despite its lowest-rated finale to date, off 17% from last year.
The same night, Fox's "So You Think You Can Dance (9.6 million, 3.6/11) held its Wednesday night performance rating, and both were up a tick from the previous week's premiere. The trend suggests "Dance" might have settled into a groove for the season.
Fox's Tuesday night presentation of "Hell's Kitchen"(9.5 million, 4.4/12) was the second-highest rated show of the week, dropping from its in-season nights paired with "American Idol" yet still averaging 10% higher than last summer's rating. The return of "The Moment of Truth" (7.4 million, 3.0/9) served as a lead-in, posting its lowest rating to date.
ABC, CBS and NBC all tied for second place in the demo for the week.
ABC was led by "Lost," followed by "Wife Swap" (5.7 million, 2.2/7) and "Supernanny" (6.7 million, 2.5/7). But ABC's presentation of the "Scripps National Spelling Bee" (4.9 million, 1.2/4) on Friday was down a steep 40% from its Thursday airing last year.
CBS' top performers were repeats, though its debut of the game show "Million Dollar Password" (10.6 million, 2.2/7) won its Sunday night time period.
NBC's Thursday night presentation of "Last Comic Standing" (4.4 million, 1.9/5) dropped 21% from its premiere.
The network fared better with its coverage of the NHL's Stanley Cup Finals, which is trending significantly higher this year. On Saturday, the network won the night with its Detroit Red Wings vs. Pittsburgh Penguins matchup(4 million, 1.7/6), up a whopping 183% from last year's comparable game.
Overall, Fox averaged 6.1 million viewers and a 2.4 rating/7 share, followed by ABC (5.6 million, 1.8/6), CBS (7.3 million, 1.8/6), NBC (5.3 million, 1.8/5) and the CW (1.8 million, 0.6/2).
