Acquisitions slow at Toronto fest

Several titles getting close to a deal, however

TORONTO -- Acquisitions continue to be slow at the Toronto Film festival, but a number of titles appeared to be moving closer to a deal.

The Kathryn Bigelow action pic "The Hurt Locker," a tense thriller about bomb defusers in Iraq, continued to draw interest in the twenty-four hours after its Monday screening; Summit Entertainment is among the distributors said to be in the mix for the CAA-repped title.

Meanwhile, distribs kicked up their heels on Endgame Entertainment's "A Chorus Line" doc "Every Little Step," with at least three buyers interested in the pic, which is being repped by William Morris Independent.

The agency on Tuesday also screened Adria Petty's documentary "Paris, Not France," a look at the more serious side of Paris Hilton, who is depicted in the doc as someone whose daft party-girl personality is in fact a persona she dons for media consumption and does not represent who she truly is.

"She's created so much mystery," said Petty at the screening, "that to see a new side of her is exciting." Hilton was actually at the screening -- prompting chatter and dozens of cell-phone photos -- but did not get up on stage.

The film has had the threat of legal action hovering over it, but the movie is generally sympathetic to Hilton, and while there were questions about whether rights were truly available, many buyers were under the impression that it was for sale.
