Actor Gary 'Tex' Brockette dies

Multihyphenate played Bobby Sheen in 'Last Picture Show'

Gary "Tex" Brockette, a jack-of-all-trades in Hollywood, died Jan. 1 at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center from cancer. He was 62.

Brockette began his career as an actor in New York, and he played contemptuous party host Bobby Sheen in 1971's "The Last Picture Show."

After teaching and directing at the conservatory American Theatre Arts in Hollywood, he moved behind the camera and worked as a script supervisor, acting coach, screenwriter, first assistant director, unit manager, line producer and director on TV series, commercials, industrials, shorts and features.

Brockette, a native of Denton, Texas, is survived by his partner of 18 years, Lee Slocum; his mother, Marchitta Wisdom; his sister, Pam Weber; and his stepdaughter, Cameron Kuperson.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the home of Tom and Martha Burns at 4385 Cobblestone Lane in La Canada. Donations can be made to the Santa Lucia Chapter of the Sierra Club.
