'The Adjustment Bureau' Tops DVD, Blu-ray Sales Charts
"Unknown" and "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules" are among the new entries for the week ending June 26.
Three moderately successful theatrical features came to DVD and Blu-ray Disc last week, and none of them appeared on Home Media Magazine’s weekly rental chart for the week ending June 26 because they’re all from Universal Studios, 20th Century Fox and Warner – the three studios with 28-day holdbacks to rental titans Netflix and Redbox.
But the three films, each with box office earnings in the $50 million-to-$60 million range, did debut in the top three slots on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks overall disc sales, DVD and Blu-ray Disc combined.
Bowing at No. 1 was Universal’s The Adjustment Bureau, a quirky sci-fi romance, starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt, that earned $62.5 million in U.S. theaters.
Warner’s Unknown, a Liam Neeson thriller not unlike Taken, rode its $63.7 million box office take to a No. 2 chart debut.
And 20th Century Fox’s kid-friendly comedy sequel Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules, with $52.7 million in domestic ticket receipts, debuted at No. 3.
The trio’s arrival knocked Paramount’s True Grit, the top seller for the previous two weeks, to No. 5, just behind sophomore Battle: Los Angeles, from Sony Pictures, which slipped to No. 4 from No. 2 its debut week.
On Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart, The Adjustment Bureau and Unknown also scored a No. 1 and No. 2 debut, with respective Blu-ray Disc shares of 43 percent and 41 percent.
Wimpy Kid, however, could only muster a fourth-place debut, with just 24 percent of its unit sales coming from Blu-ray Disc.
The No. 3 position went to Battle: Los Angeles, No. 1 the previous week.
The top rental, according to Home Media Magazine, was the Sony Pictures comedy Just Go With It, which debuted at No. 2 two weeks earlier but got bumped to No. 3 last week by Battle and True Grit.
