AFM 2011: We Distribution Chops Up World With 'The Guillotines'
The action thriller from “Infernal Affairs” director Andrew Lau sells for North America, Germany and Australia in string of deals.
Los Angeles - Well Go USA has snatched up North American rights to Asia action tentpole The Guillotines from We Distribution in one of a series of big territory deals for the title. Other agreements signed include one with Splendid Films for German-speaking Europe and Benelux and Icon Film Distribution for Australia/New Zealand.
Guillotines marks the first collaboration between director Andrew Lau, helmer of the Infernal Affairs trilogy, and Bodyguards and Assassins producer Peter Ho-sun Chan. It stars a who’s who of hot Asian up-and-comers including The Message star Huang Xiaoming, Reign of Assassins Shawn Yue, Wu Xia’s Jimmy Wang Yu, Ethan Juan of Monga and Chinese pop star Li Yuchan, who appeared in both Bodyguards and Assassins and Flying Swords of Dragon Gate.
The period actioner centers on an elite group of assassins, called the Guillotines, who carry out secret missions for the Chinese Emperor.
Chan’s We Pictures banner is co-producing with Media Asia Film Production. Media Asia is handling Asian sales outside China and We has sales duties for the rest of the world.
