AFM 2012: Alexander Payne's 'Nebraska' Lands at FilmNation (Exclusive)
Alexander Payne's next film, Nebraska -- seeking to supplement its financing -- will be sold off in a number of international markets where Paramount isn't distributing the movie.
Glen Basner's FilmNation, known for its stable of auteur directors, is representing Nebraska internationally and has struck a number of key deals. He'll continue meeting with international buyers at the American Film Market, which runs Wednesday through Nov. 7 in Santa Monica.
The black-and-white Nebraska stars Bruce Dern as a cantankerous old man who naively thinks he's won a million dollars from a magazine sweepstakes. His son, played by Will Forte, reluctantly agrees to escort him on a road trip from Billings, Mo., to Lincoln, Neb.
Produced by Bona Fide Productions' Albert Berger and Ron Yerxa, the team behind indie hit Little Miss Sunshine, Nebraska is being financed and distributed by Paramount in North America and select foreign markets.
Blue Lake, the media fund managed by Echo Lake Entertainment and Blue Ice Capital Group, has entered into an exclusive sales agency agreement with Paramount and is providing financing to back international sales.
Payne's most recent film, The Descendants, was a worldwide success, grossing $82.6 million domestically and another $94.7 million overseas.
"Alexander Payne is an extraordinary filmmaker, and we're thrilled to be working with both him and Paramount to bring Nebraska to international audiences," Basner said.
FilmNation has already closed deals a raft of deals for Nebraska. Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has picked up a raft of territories,including Latin America, South Africa and Scandinavia. Roadshow Films has picked up rights for Australia, and Diaphana has taken in France. Vertigo will handle the film in Spain.
Nebraska also has sold in Hong Kong (Golden Scene), Japan (Longride), Malaysia (Suraya Film) and Taiwan (Studio Solution Group).
