AFM: Anton Yelchin Cast in Jay Baruchel's 'Baseballissimo' (Exclusive)
The 'Like Crazy' star will play a minor-league pitcher on an Italian baseball team
Anton Yelchin has taken the lead role in Baseballissimo, the Canadian indie that Jay Baruchel co-wrote and stars in.
Yelchin will play Kyle Buffone, a rising baseball minor-league player who gets detoured on the way to major-league stardom by pitching for the Peones, a baseball team in Italy. The film, structured as a Canada-Italy co-production from A71 Productions and Gefilter Productions, was written by Baruchel and Jesse Chabot and will be directed by Jacob Tierney.
"Having someone of Anton's skill level and talent understand and gravitate to the story that Jay and Jesse have so eloquently written is obviously a great coup for our team and the future success of this film," A71 Productions producer David Miller told The Hollywood Reporter from AFM.
The film is based on the book Baseballissimo by Canadian musician and writer Dave Bidini, who also executive produces with Geddy Lee, frontman for Canadian rockers Rush.
Tierney and Baruchel earlier collaborated on two films, The Trotsky and Good Neighbors. Baruchel, who counts Hollywood fare such as She's Out of My League, Tropic Thunder and How to Train Your Dragon among his credits, has also been active in Canadian films.
He penned the screenplay, along with Evan Goldberg, for Goon, a hockey comedy now headed for a sequel, and co-starred in Jonathan Sobol's The Art of the Steal, which also had Kurt Russell and Matt Dillon in the cast.
Yelchin is repped by CAA. Baruchel and Chabot are also repped by CAA, Thruline Entertainment and Jamie Feldman at Lichter, Grossman. Tierney is represented by the Garry Goddard Agency and Circle of Confusion.
