'Florence Foster Jenkins' will be directed by Stephen Frears

Florence Foster Jenkins, Pathe International’s upcoming drama to be directed by Stephen Frears and starring Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant, has picked up a host of international distribution deals at AFM.

The film has found distributors in Australia (eOne), Benelux (Paradiso), the Czech Republic and Slovakia (AQS), Eastern Europe (Ablo), Germany (Constantin), Greece (Feelgood), Hong Kong (Sun Dream), Israel (Shani), Italy (Lucky Red), Japan (Gaga), the Middle East (Gulf Film), Poland (Monolith), Scandinavia (Svensk), South Africa (M-Net) and Turkey (Fabula).

Pathe will distribute the film in the U.K., France and Switzerland. The company also said Wednesday that it was talking to "several potential U.S. buyers" without providing further details.

Set to begin principal photography in May, Florence Foster Jenkins will tell the true story of the legendary New York heiress and socialite — to be played by Streep — and her obsessive pursuit of a career as an opera star despite a voice that was deemed awful. Grant will play her husband and manager, St. Clair Bayfield, who attempts to protect his wife from the truth, a challenge that reaches its peak when she decides to give a public concert at Carnegie Hall in 1944.

The film will be produced by Michael Kuhn (The Duchess) and regular Frears collaborator Tracey Seaward (The Queen, Philomena), and executive produced by Cameron McCracken for Pathe and Christine Langan for the BBC.
