Gervais will write and direct the comedy and star in it with Bana

Ricky Gervais and Eric Bana are teaming up to remake the French comedy Special Correspondents.

Gervais will direct the satirical comedy as well as star in it, with Bana also starring.

The story tells of a once-hot radio journalist (Bana), and his technician (Gervais) who, when tasked with reporting on a rebel uprising in Ecuador, fake their own kidnapping, pretending to be on the ground while actually “reporting” from the comfort of a hideout above a New York City restaurant across the street from their station. As their false reports of the conflict escalate, so does the world’s response to their situation, which ultimately forces them to sneak into Ecuador and find the rebels they’ve been reporting on.

The setting changes from the 2009 French movie, which was titled Envoyes tres speciaux and centered on the war in Iraq.

The film is a co-production between Bron Studios and Unanimous Entertainment in association with Creative Wealth Media Finance.

Unanimous’ Chris Coen, Bron’s Aaron L. Gilbert, and Manuel Munz (who produced the original French movie) are producing. Creative Wealth’s Jason Cloth and Larry Sanitsky are executive producers.

Protagonist Pictures is selling international rights and will introduce the project at the American Film Market. WME Global will be selling the domestic rights.

The producers are hoping to shoot the movie in Vancouver and New York in the spring of 2015.

Bana, who recently starred in Deliver Us From Evil, is currently shooting Disney’s coast guard drama The Finest Hours with Chris Pine. He will follow that up with The Secret Scripture.

Gervais has co-directed the features The Invention of Lying and Cemetery Junction, and this would be his first solo outing as a feature director. He last starred in Muppets Most Wanted.

Bana is represented by WME. Gervais is represented by WME and United Agents.
