Al Jazeera English's Tony Burman Back To Canada
The veteran Canadian TV newsman returns from Doha and Washington, D.C. to teach journalism in Toronto.
TORONTO -- Al Jazeera English topper Tony Burman is returning to Canada to take up a research chair at the Ryerson School of Journalism in Toronto.
Burman served as managing director of Al Jazeera’s international English-language news channel from 2008 to 2010, working out of its Doha, Qatar headquarters.
Then last Fall, Burman became Al Jazeera’s head of strategy for the Americas, based in Washington, DC.
His role included securing mainstream acceptance of the 24-hour news channel in the U.S. market by convincing American carriers to look to Canada where major cable operators are now comfortable offering Al Jazeera English to their subscribers.
Burman joined Al Jazeera from the Canadian Broadcasting Corp., where his 35-year career included serving as editor-in-chief for eight years to 2008.
