Alamo Drafthouse Theater Coming to L.A. (Report)

The Austin-based chain is said to have eyes on a downtown location.

Los Angeles may be close to landing an Alamo Drafthouse.

The Texas-based chain of movie theaters has signed a letter of intent to open an eight-screen theater downtown, Los Angeles Downtown News reports. The 30,000 square-foot, single-story building would be located in downtown’s historic core near Fourth and Main streets.

A lease is expected to be signed this month, and the location likely would open in 18 months.

The Alamo Drafthouse, which has locations in 13 cities around the country, is known for holding specialty nights focusing on such genres as independent and horror films. Aint It Cool News founder Harry Knowles is among the theater’s notable devotees. Since 1999, Knowles has hosted a Butt-Numb-A-Thon to celebrate his birthday. The fest shows 24 hours of vintage films.

The chain of theaters is known for its strict non-talking policy, as well as it’s no texting rules. In 2011, a patron was kicked out of the Austin location and not given a refund after texting during a movie. The angry patron’s obscenity-laden phone message to the theater went viral and was used as a don’t text PSA ahead of its R-rated films for a weekend.
