Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu Going Funny With 'Birdman'
The filmmaker, known for heavy dramas such as 'Babel' and '21 Grams,' will direct a film about an actor who once played a superhero but now tries to mount a Broadway play.
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, known for his soul-searing dramas such as Babel and 21 Grams, is going for a light touch with his latest project.
The filmmaker said Friday that he will direct Birdman, a comedy piece he co-wrote with Nicolas Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris and Armando Bo.
The indie follows a former actor, who once played an iconic superhero, as he mounts a Broadway play in a bid to reclaim past glory. The movie will take place in one location over the course of three days as the actor juggles family, career and his sanity.
Gonzalez Inarritu, who is producing with Robert Graf and John Lesher, is eyeing a start in March.
He still is developing The Revenant, a gritty revenge wilderness drama for New Regency. That project, which Leonardo DiCaprio has been flirting with on-and-off for months, could be on the filmmaker’s docket after Birdman.
Gonzalez Inarritu and the film are repped by CAA.
