Alex Gibney Scientology Doc Gets International Sales Agent
Content Media will sell ‘Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief,' which will have its world premiere at Sundance.
The doc, which will have its world premiere at this month’s Sundance Film Festival, is based on the book by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Lawrence Wright, and sees The Armstrong Lie-director profile eight former Scientology members, highlighting the organization's roots and rise to popularity in Hollywood and beyond.
Among those former followers providing details is filmmaker Paul Haggis, whose 2011 profile in the New Yorker by Wright helped lay the foundations for his controversial book, which was exclusively excerpted in The Hollywood Reporter.
Content describes Going Clear as “a provocative tale of ego, exploitation and lust for power,” in which those interviewed “describe the systematic history of abuse and betrayal by Church officials. including the current leadership.”
HBO already has U.S. TV rights to the documentary, and is reportedly eyeing an air date of March 16.
