Alexa Chung, Fuse News Anchor, on Ignoring Justin Bieber's Tattoos, Rihanna's Nudity
The TV host and fashion icon says she "won't get bogged down" with frivolous gossip as co-host of the soon-to-launch music show.
Alexa Chung occupies a rarified niche in the celebri-verse: she's both a Vogue-approved global fashion icon and host of TV shows spanning a Golden Globes red carpet special to pop culture-themed series in her native Britain to MTV's It's On With Alexa Chung, a short-lived TRL successor that aired in 2009.
Four years later, the ex-model returns to regularly scheduled stateside programming as co-anchor (with Matte Babel) of Fuse News, launching Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET on Fuse, the music network owned by the Madison Square Garden Company. Jack Osbourne joins as a senior contributing correspondent on the half-hour daily program, which promises to cover music industry news with "insight, expertise and unparalleled depth of coverage" as well as with artist interviews, performances and video premieres.
"Music isn't serious," Chung tells The Hollywood Reporter, but "I think you need to tackle it in a way that's authentic, that the facts are facts. We're not going to delve into gossip. ... We have opinions and stuff. We won't get bogged down with Justin Bieber's tattoos and Rihanna's getting naked again. It's more like, what's behind their music, what inspires them."
As for Rihanna, and the incessant media coverage of her personal life, she jokes: "It would be more shocking if she just stayed in. ... Headline: Rihanna stays in, drinks tea!"
Fuse News is "reminiscent of that type of reporting where you genuinely believe that those people are going to gigs and do know the people," says Chung, referring to music-centric MTV News of yore.
The 29-year-old, whose favorite new bands include Tame Impala and Father John Misty, intends to hit the ground running at the Grammy Awards this Sunday, snagging stars such as Justin Timberlake for red-carpet interviews and saying (she jokes): "You will talk to me!"
Live at the Grammys: Fuse News kicks off coverage of the awards starting at 6 p.m. ET, with a round-up of the biggest moments and best artist interviews slated to air Monday at 8 p.m. ET.
As for her non-Fuse projects, Chung -- who won the British Style Award at the 2012 British Fashion Awards for the third year in a row -- says she is in the early stages of writing a book (she's mum on the details) and also hints that there might be another sartorial collaboration coming soon. She's known for her boho-chic, high-low, much-mimicked style, and has partnered with the J.Crew-owned retail chain Madewell on buzzy collections that debuted in 2010 and 2011.
With all that going on, what drew her to Fuse?
"Genuinely, it wasn't for anything other than I wanted to have fun," she explains. "I really missed presenting a music show," and when pitched the Fuse News concept by the network, she says she thought, "That's the perfect show I want to watch. So I don't want to let someone else present it and me be jealous at the same time watching it."
