Alexa Ray Joel Collapses on Stage During Show
The 28-year-old daughter of Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley fainted while performing in New York City over the weekend.
Alexa Ray Joel became ill and fainted on stage during the final performance of a concert run in New York City over the weekend. The singer-songwriter, who is the daughter of music legend Billy Joel and model Christie Brinkley, was wrapping up a two-week engagement at Cafe Carlyle when she told audience members she felt sick and was having neck and back pain.
At some point during the sold-out performance, Joel collapsed and was immediately taken to New York Presbyterian Hospital, where she was diagnosed with vasovagal syncope, a sudden drop in blood pressure (caused by stress or other factors) that can lead to fainting.
"I wanted to thank everyone for coming out to support me," Joel, 28, said in a statement to Page Six on Monday. "I was excited and determined to fulfill my final performance and I really wanted to end my run with a bang, but this was not what I had in mind and hope I have the opportunity to make it up to the wonderful audience very soon. Thanks for all the concern."
Joel's Carlyle residency began April 1. Since 2006, she has released an EP and several singles, including last year's "Just the Way You Are," a cover of her father's 1977 classic.
