Alfonso Arau in Talks With Netflix for Spanish Conquest Miniseries (Exclusive)
The miniseries is about how Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortez defeated the Aztec empire.
Alfonso Arau (Like Water for Chocolate) is in talks with Netflix to develop The Conquest of the Sun, a miniseries about how Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortez defeated the Aztec empire.
The Conquest of the Sun will consist of three, two-hour episodes written in English, Spanish and Nahuatl. Arau said an important Hollywood screenwriter is attached, but he declined to provide the writer's name.
"It's the most fabulous story that's never been told," said Arau, who is presiding over the Ibero-American jury at the Guadalajara film fest.
Arau also said shooting will begin in Mexico and the U.S. later this year on In the Stars, a biopic about Jose Hernandez, the first Mexican-American astronaut. Based on Hernandez's autobiography Reaching for the Stars, Arau penned the script with Bagdad Cafe screenwriter Christopher Doherty. Lorenzo O'Brien (American Family) is co-producing.
Arau and Doherty also are co-writing The Crime of Love, which the Mexican filmmaker describes as a Romeo and Juliet-style love story set in Nazi Germany.
