Alia Shawkat Joins Ethan Hawke's Indie Biopic 'Blaze' (Exclusive)

Ben Dickey is toplining the indie biopic of country and western songwriter Blaze Foley being directed by Hawke.

Alia Shawkat is starring opposite songwriter and musician Ben Dickey in Blaze, an indie biopic of country and western songwriter Blaze Foley being directed by Ethan Hawke.

Hawke co-wrote the script with Sybil Rosen, adapting Rosen’s memoir Living in the Woods in a Tree. Shawkat is playing the writer, who was Foley’s longtime girlfriend and muse.

Foley and Rosen lived in a treehouse in the 1970s, the era where Foley transformed from a hippie musician to an influential singer-songwriter. His most famous tunes, If Only I Could Fly, was written for her.

The film is shooting in Louisiana and Mississippi. Hawke, Ryan Hawke, Jake Seal and John Sloss are producing.

Shawkat was most recently seen starring in the first season of TBS’ Search Party, a buzzy show that was recently picked up for a second season. She currently is on screens in A24’s awards contender 20th Century Women, written and directed by Mike Mills, and will next be seen in Paint It Black, Amber Tamblyn’s directorial debut, which was recently acquired by Imagination Worldwide.
