Alliance takes 'Single Man' for Canada, Spain

A day after Weinstein Co. takes U.S., German rights

TORONTO -- Canadian indie distributor Alliance Films has picked up Tom Ford's "A Single Man" for Canada and Spain a day after The Weinstein Co. acquired the Toronto break-out pic's U.S. and German rights.

Alliance Films hammered out the deal late Tuesday with Stuart Ford at IM Global, the international distributor for the indie feature by fashion designer and director Tom Ford.

Alliance plans a late 2009 release for "A Single Man," which earned lead Colin Firth the best actors prize in Venice before it shifted to Toronto and a world premiere Monday night heavily attended by film buyers.

Alliance Films has a Canadian output deal with The Weinstein Co.

There was no word on the timing of the Spanish release, via Alliance Films' Aurum Producciones unit.

The Canadian indie distributor earlier in the festival unveiled a new domestic output deal with newly launched U.S. distributor Apparition (HR, Sept. 14).
