'Amazing Grace' to Bless Broadway This Summer
The new musical, based on the true story behind the world's most popular Christian hymn, will begin performances on June 25.
How sweet the sound.
Following its commercially successful tryout run in Chicago last fall, the new faith-based musical Amazing Grace is bound for Broadway this summer, taking advantage of the early vacancy at the Nederlander Theatre created by the premature closing of Honeymoon in Vegas.
Directed by Gabriel Barre, the show features music and lyrics by Christopher Smith, who co-wrote the book with Arthur Giron. It begins previews on June 25, with an official opening scheduled for July 16.
The musical is based on the stirring history behind the world’s most beloved hymn, following one man’s journey that led to the birth of the abolitionist movement.

Josh Young, a Tony nominee for the 2012 revival of Jesus Christ Superstar, heads the cast as the son of a British slave trader, torn between loyalty to his father and the more humanistic views of his childhood sweetheart.
The 33-member cast also includes Erin Mackey, Chuck Cooper, Chris Hoch, Stanley Bahorek, Harriett D. Foy, Laiona Michelle, Rachael Ferrera and Elizabeth Ward Land. Choreography is by Christopher Gattelli, a Tony winner for Newsies, represented this season via his work on the Broadway revival of The King and I.
Lead producers on Amazing Grace are Broadway newcomers Carolyn Rossi Copeland and Alexander Rankin.
