'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' Breaks Opening-Day Box-Office Record in Hong Kong
The film took in $1.23 million on May 1, the biggest first-day gross of all time in the territory.
HONG KONG -- The Amazing Spider-Man 2 set a new opening-day record in Hong Kong upon its release on May 1.
The sequel to the web crawler reboot took in HK$9.56 million ($1.23 million) on its first day, the largest opening gross in the territory ever, according to Hong Kong Box Office Ltd., a subsidiary of Hong Kong Motion Picture Industry Association and Hong Kong Theatres Association.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opened on 720 screens in the territory.
Hong Kong has a history of supporting Peter Parker and his spider alter ego. The previous record holder was Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3, which grossed HK$7.56 million on its opening day in 2007 on 641 screens. Iron Man 3 ranks third, with HK$6.6 million on 714 screens in 2013.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens in mainland China on May 4.
