'The Amazing Spider-Man' Weaves Biggest India Opening for a Hollywood Release
The superhero adventure grossed about $6 million from over 1,200 prints over its three-day opening weekend in India.
MUMBAI – The Amazing Spider-Man registered the highest opening weekend gross for a Hollywood film in India, collecting about $6 million (Rupees 340 million) according to Sony Pictures India. The film was released here on June 29, ahead of its July 3 U.S. release date.
As reported earlier, Spider-Man also set a record for a Hollywood film with the highest number of prints, at over 1,200 India-wide which included dubbed versions in Hindi, Telegu and Tamil.
“Spider-Man is the most consistently successful movie franchise in India and it’s great to see that five years since the last movie, and with a whole new cast and storyline, the franchise is going from strength to strength. What’s important to note is that a significant part of the box office has come from smaller centres as we have leveraged our strength in distributing and marketing this film across the country,” said Sony Pictures India MD Kercy Daruwala.
The film also features a brief cameo by well-known Indian actor Irrfan Khan (Slumdog Millionaire).
“Houseful boards across the country this past weekend have meant that many people have not had a chance to see the film yet. That, along with great reviews and word of mouth, leads us to expect to continue this performance over the weeks to come,” added Daruwala.
