Amazon Acquires CBS Summer Series 'Extant' With Halle Berry for U.K.
The arrangement for the sci-fi thriller marks the first time that CBS will premiere a show in Britain on Amazon.
Amazon and CBS Corp.'s CBS Studios unit said Wednesday that upcoming sci-fi thriller series Extant, starring Halle Berry and produced by Steven Spielberg's Amblin Television, will premiere in the U.K. exclusively on Amazon Prime Instant Video.
Financial details weren't disclosed. The arrangement that covers first-run rights for the summer show marks the first time that CBS is premiering a show in the U.K. on Amazon.
The first episode will debut on the streaming video service on July 10, the day after the show's U.S. premiere on CBS. New episodes will be available on Amazon Prime Instant Video each week one day after their U.S. airing.
Extant is a mystery thriller about a female astronaut, played by Berry, who is trying to reconnect with her family when she returns after a year in space. "Her experiences in space lead to events that ultimately change the course of human history," according to the show description.
"Extant is a bold and thrilling new series from some of the biggest names in entertainment," said Chris Bird, Amazon Instant Video Film & TV strategy director. "Having such a highly anticipated and star-studded show premiere exclusively on Prime Instant Video is a perfect example of our ongoing commitment to bringing the very best in movie and TV entertainment to our customers in the U.K."
"We're excited to see the first window of Extant stream on Amazon in the U.K.," said Armando Nunez, president and CEO, CBS Global Distribution Group. "With its stellar talent, unique concept and production auspices, Extant is sure to be this year's television event in the U.S. and around the globe."
Amazon's other recent exclusive U.K. premieres of TV shows have included Michael Bay's Black Sails, which in the U.S. airs on Starz.
