Amazon's LoveFilm Gets Disney Streaming Content
NEW YORK -- Amazon.com’s LoveFilm, which has been called the “Netflix of Europe,” has signed a streaming video deal with the Walt Disney Co. UK & Ireland for more than 50 library feature films.
The subscription VOD and pay-per-view film deal sees LoveFilm, Europe’s largest subscription service for streaming movies and TV shows as well as DVDs by mail, become Disney's first major partner in U.K. subscription VOD outside of the pay TV window.
Members who pay 5.99 pounds ($9.77) or more a month will be able to rent and stream a selection of library film titles for free, including Dead Poets Society, Armageddon, Cocktail, Bedknobs and Broomsticks and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Netflix’s streaming service includes Disney films as part of a deal with Starz, which has a Disney output deal.
In addition, recently released Disney titles, such as Tron: Legacy, Tangled and I Am Number Four, will be available via LoveFilm’s pay-per-view service.
"This is a great endorsement of the popularity of LoveFilm, as Disney is one of the world's leading studios,” said LoveFilm CEO Simon Calver.
Said Catherine Powell, senior vp and general manager of media distribution, The Walt Disney Company EMEA: "We're working with innovative partners such as LoveFilm to offer our programming to viewers in evermore flexible, easy to access ways, and this agreement builds on our existing DVD rental partnership to further extend the availability of our films amongst U.K. audiences."
Netflix has said it wants to keep pushing into international markets after it launched in Canada.
